Sanctuary Amaidiyana
Near Auroville Road, Bommayapalayam, Kuilapalayam, Tamil Nadu, India.

For those seeking shelter from the chaos of modern living, a refuge awaits on the quiet fringes of Auroville in Tamil Nadu. In fact, this harmony is promised in our name.
Amaidiyana is the Tamil word for peace, and within our spaces and through our experiences, you will rediscover a quiet refuge far from the madding crowd, where creativity, wellness, and conscious living create the perfect sanctuary for your soul.

Our retreat shares its philosophy with the unique global township of Auroville, an experiment in conscious living, where peace and harmony are pursued above all else. The influences of this landmark on the spiritual landscape of Pondicherry & Tamil Nadu can be felt deeply at Sanctuary Amaidiyana.

Designed by Auroville-based architect Mona Doctor Pingel, our spaces live in harmony with nature—where light, air, and landscape shape intuitive design. The architectural soul of Sanctuary Amaidiyana is craftsmanship: hand-cut stone, reclaimed wood, locally forged metal, and consciously replanted teak, all shaped by local artisans. Free from factory-made finishes, the retreat becomes living architecture—engineering, beauty, and stillness in quiet balance—while hand-painted artworks by Auroville artists bring its walls gently to life.

Heiwa, meaning peace and harmony in Japanese, lends its spirit to the Japanese Heiwa Room at Sanctuary Amaidiyana. This space, by architect Popo Pingel, unfolds like an architectural haiku — the roof, shaped like two palms in prayer, offers shelter and devotion, while a Japanese rock garden at its heart invites stillness, balance, and reflection.

Rooted in sustainability and guided by sensory pleasure, our culinary philosophy celebrates mindful indulgence. The menu draws inspiration from CGH Earth’s Conscious Cuisine ethos and the rich, vibrant food traditions of Tamil Nadu & Auroville—where purpose, place, and flavour come together at the table. Fresh herbs and vegetables are harvested from our organic kitchen garden, complemented by artisanal Auroville produce—cheeses, breads, chocolates, condiments, and grains—that elevate every dish.

The dining experience unfolds across a thoughtfully curated spectrum—refined comfort food, authentic Tamil specialties, gourmet wellness creations, and seafood inspired by coastal abundance. Each plate reflects culinary excellence, sustainability, and sensory pleasure, where mindful nourishment meets indulgence.

Sanctuary Amaidiyana is a gateway to the world of Auroville's studios, art spaces, sustainable workshops, as well as the heritage streets, coastal rhythms, and café culture of Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry. Here, stillness flows easily into discovery, and signature experiences meet the quiet joy of finding something new every day.
